Description of an electronic safety and security system (ESS)
The core of any electronic safety and security system is its switchboard, which evaluates all signals from sensors or control devices and based on their analysis and according to its programming, it decides whether to raise alarm.
80 % of burglaries are carried out by overcoming the front door. That is why securing the entrance is of the utmost importance. First of all, doors should be protected by a safety mechanical lock, so they cannot be easily opened. It is worth mentioning that the more complex the lock is, the more resilient it gets. Indication of opening the door is monitored by a magnetic detector. It informs the switchboard that the door has been opened and the switchboard then usually awaits to be disarmed. If the switchboard is not disarmed in a certain period of time, object breach alarm is raised.
Modern ESS systems are usually disarmed via a keypad by typing in a several-digit access code or by pressing a button on a radio remote control. Both systems are absolutely secure. The possibility of typing in the right code is usually limited to a few tries before alarm is raised. So called “rolling code” is used with control keychains in order to prevent any attempts to copy the signal.
All other entrances into the object – all doors and windows – can be secured in a similar way as the main door.
Basic parts of electronic safety and security systems (ESS)
Acoustic glass break detectors
These sensors are located in a room with glass panes and they are able to detect breaking glass with high accuracy. High-quality sensors are absolutely immune to other, even similar sounds. Magnetic sensors and glass break detectors secure the basic, so called inner perimeter security of an object.
Passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor)
These sensors are able to reliably detect movement of a person in a certain room based on analyzing temperatures in that space. For different applications, different PIR sensors with varying characteristics are used:
PIR sensors suitable for standard spaces, PIR sensors for long narrow corridors, sensors immune to small animals or pets (dogs, cats, turtles…), combined sensors, so called dual, where there are two kinds of sensors in a single detector.
Fire alarms
Protection of objects from fire and explosion hazards is a standard with ESS systems too. To detect a fire in time, ionization, optical or heat detectors are used. The most used detectors are ionization detectors which detect elevated levels of smoke in a room very fast and very reliably. Ionization detectors also come at reasonable prices. Standardly they come with an in-built siren which can alarm inhabitants in case of danger.
Gas leak detectors
If heating and cooking is done using gas, it is without questions that we should install a gas leak detector. The most modern detectors allow detection of all kinds of explosive gases. In case of higher than pre-programmed safe level of gas concentration, the safety system is activated. At the same time, it signals danger with a siren and it is also able to close the gas inlet automatically in case of danger.
Interior sirens
Indoor interior sirens have high pitch piercing sound and their main goal is to scare of the perpetrator.
Outdoor sirens
Exterior sirens are supposed to attract attention of neighbors or passers-by in case of an alarm. A high output siren accompanied by a xenon flash light serves this very purpose. As a siren placed outdoors can be easily vulnerable, it is essential to keep in mind its durable mechanical design. The latest sirens, under their plastic outer shell which protects them from environmental influences, hide another steel casing. Of course, an internal accumulator should be used as well, if a perpetrator attempts to disconnect the siren from the connection to the switchboard, or even tries to tear it down from the wall.
Automatic phone dialers
To get the information about the alarm to the flat’s owner immediately, communicators using landlines or cellular networks are used. These devices can be installed individually, or they tend to be included as part of the switchboard. They are connected to the telephone outlet and to the telephone. In case of alarm, the line is automatically freed and the automatic phone dialer starts dialing user-defined telephone numbers (landline, mobile phone, pager) and plays a prerecorded message stored in the memory by the user.
What are the main advantages of wired ESS systems?
These products are usually cheaper than wireless products (without taking into account the price of the installation material and installation work) and components by various manufacturers can be combined in a single installation. It is not necessary to change batteries in detectors; however, it is necessary to perform preventive check-ups of the system.
What are the main advantages of wireless ESS systems?
Installation itself is very fast and without larger intrusions into the object (only the minimum of drilling and chiseling). The final look of the interior is not disturbed by installation of cable ducts. Systems are very easily broadened and they can be also easily dismantled (in case of moving). Self-testing function of all parts of the system announces potential malfunctions or need to replace batteries.
