Analog camera systems
The core of the whole system is a digital recording unit (DVR) which serves as a controlling and also recording unit. This device is produced in several designs: four, eight, nine, sixteen or thirty-two channels. Inside the recording device, there is a hard disk array, where all the data from individual cameras is stored.
A DVR records data in several formats – formats like MPEG4, Motion-JPEG (video recording) and JPEG format to record static pictures are among the most used ones.
Nowadays, most digital recorders on the market have integrated network interface with TCP/IP, which means that these devices can be linked to a local computer network and they can be remotely controlled, or used to watch live feeds or recorded content via the Internet with the help of special software, which is mostly supplied for free with the recording device.

What is a network camera?
Network, or a web camera is, simply put, a camera and a computer in one. It is attached directly to the computer network as any other network device. A network camera has its own IP address and inbuilt functions which handle network communication. All that is needed to watch the picture (static or video) via a network is already in-built in the unit. A network camera comes with preinstalled software for web servers, FTP servers, FTP clients and an email client. Another useful feature is an alarm input and output. More modern cameras might support many other advanced functions like motion detection or analog video output.
